Bang!
I heard the shot ring
That sound changed my life
It changed everything

I heard the sound of a gun being fired
Today, about an hour ago
It wasn’t my fault
Johnny brought a gun to school, I got hit, now I must go

God told me to say my goodbies and then leave
So here I am, and this is my last goodbye
Please, even though I won’t be here anymore
Try not to miss me too much, try not to cry

Tell Daddy
I’m sorry I wasn’t always the best
Tell him I love him
And in my eyes, he was better than all the rest

Tell my sister
We fought often but believe it or not, I loved her too
Tell her to live her life
And to follow her dreams and do whatever she wants to do

Don’t worry about me, I’m not alone
Grandma is waiting for me
And I’ll always watch over you
Even if you can’t see

My last request
My dying wish
Is to warn others of weapons
And it’s risk

Never bring weapons
Even if you’ll never use them, ever
They are still horrible
Use them? Never

In a recent study by the UN, it was found that firearms cause an average 60% of all homicides.

Gun violence leads to significant monetary costs. Phillip J. Cook estimated that gun violence costs the USA $100 billion annually.

70 to 80 million Americans own guns.

Most guns used in crimes are stolen, either from homes or gun dealers.

40-45% of households in the U.S. contain a gun. This translates into a loaded gun in one in every ten households with children, and a gun that’s left unlocked and just “hidden away” in one in every eight family homes.

Today during our morning session we had four different guest speakers, and they all had different information to share. The first speaker was a sheriff, he told us about his job, possible life situations involving police encounters, and he also gave us his view point of gun violence causes. Then we had two more guest speakers named Coach Mohamed and Queen they both had personal experiences involving gun/gang violence and they encouraged everyone to speak out against it, and to keep working on our education as young people. The last speaker was the woman from the anti gun violence organization we are making postcards for, she told us the story of what made her want to start the organization. All of those guest speakers were very helpful for gaining information on the topic, so now we all have enough to make our designs.

A woman named Alyssa came in as a guest speaker today, she introduced to us a very interesting opportunity. There is a current Minneapolis project called “Picturing Peace” which consists of adolescents of Minneapolis participating in their own vision of peace, by going out and photographing their surroundings. There is a contest that involves similar principals, young people going out and capturing photos of what they perceive as peace. It’s a way to visualize what peace is like, to give people and idea of what they should strive for. Giving these people the opportunity to share their own perspectives of peace will allow everyone to understand different view points and help the city improve itself to those standards, the standards of the future.

Food Desert: “areas within city centers where low income people have poor access to vegetables, fruits, and other whole foods.

Today in the morning session we did a very interesting activity. We traveled to the nearest supermarkets and corner stores and looked at their food selection. We checked the ratios of healthy food to unhealthy food, and the quality of their produce. We also recorded the distance from each store to HIA, to more realistically show how far people have to walk in order to get healthy food. Our results were a little alarming, we found that there were hardly any good quality fruits and vegetables at the closest store, and that the other stores are more than 5 blocks away. With that information alone, we can conclude that this part of the city is becoming a food desert. The people in this part of the city aren’t getting the right type of nutrition, their closest food supplies don’t provide enough quality health food, and the ones that do aren’t easily accessible. We need to battle this, because many other problems can arise from it.

Michelle was absent today, so we had Kue to come up and take her place. The today’s lesson we learned was about food desert, food desert means those people who can’t have access food. Therefore its hard to get food, especially those who are poor or lives in suburbs. Kue had us to read an article to have a better understanding and the situation about the evolution of food. The evolution of food is not what it means but is that the food has become quite scarce to obtain. Not too scarce but just that not everyone is able to get food. After wards Kue had us walk around the neighborhood and go to the stores to see the products they have is healthy food or not. The group was split into two with both supervisors Pangnhia and kue, walking on Lowry street. Every time we finish looking through a store we go out and evaluate the store produce and move onward. I think today was really hot and sort of sticky but over all it was fun going around to the neighborhood and exploring.
Also a way to prevent us from getting bad food is sign a petition to show it to the government and do some donation to those who can’t access to food.
